Windows Server 2019 Core WITH graphical management!

With the release of Server 2019, Microsoft made some change to what and how the CORE (the one without a GUI) version behaves.

First and important: while installing choose wisely between core or desktop experience version, because you cannot change your mind after installation. You cannot uninstall the desktop experience (aka the GUI), neither can you add it afterwards.

BUT… on a Core edition, you CAN add some ‘Features On Demand’ !

In older versions, it was known as the mini-shell.

How to install it?

With internet connection:

  1. From command prompt, type Start Powershell
  2. Add-WindowsCapability -Online -Name ServerCore.AppCompatibility~~~~0.0.1.0
  3. restart-computer

You might need to update the operating system first for it to succeed…

Without internet connection:

  1. Download the separate ISO from download center of official source
  2. From command prompt, type Start Powershell
  3. Use Mount-DiskImage -ImagePath C:\folder_where_ISO_is_saved\ISO_filename.iso
  4. Add-WindowsCapability -Online -Name ServerCore.AppCompatibility~~~~0.0.1.0 -Source <D:>
    –LimitAccess
  5. restart-computer

Adding Internet Explorer 11

For those in desperate need of a browser… with the ISO you can even add Internet Explorer 11, using:

$package_path = “D:\Microsoft-Windows-InternetExplorer-Optional-Package~31bf3856ad364e35~amd64~~.cab”

Add-WindowsPackage -Online -PackagePath $package_path

Starting your tools

Explorer Explorer.exe
Powershell ISE Powershell_ise.exe
Microsoft management console mmc.exe
Event Viewer Eventvwr.msc
